Like virtually everywhere in Europe in the last month, Bulgaria\u2019s media focused almost entirely on the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few key figures and some of the main measures taken by the government by <\/span>April 15<\/b>th<\/b>, followed by the events that made the headlines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n – <\/span>There are<\/span><\/a> 735 confirmed cases in the country in total. 35 people have died and 105 have recovered. The tests performed amount to 18 502.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n – A state of emergency was declared on March 13<\/span>th<\/span> for one month and<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span> prolonged<\/span><\/a> at the beginning of April for one month more \u2013 until May 13<\/span>th<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n – All borders have been completely<\/span>\u00a0closed<\/span><\/a> for citizens of foreign countries and for people coming in from a dozen of countries irrespective of citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n – Most commercial sites<\/span>\u00a0have been closed<\/span><\/a>, except for providers of essential goods such as food, medicine, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n – All educational institutions have closed their doors.<\/span><\/p>\n – Entering public parks and city gardens <\/span>is <\/span>prohibited<\/span><\/a>. As of April 2<\/span>nd<\/span> citizens have been <\/span>fined<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a total of nearly 4 million BGN or about 2 million Euro.<\/span><\/p>\n – Wearing masks in public spaces<\/span>\u00a0has been made<\/span><\/a> mandatory.<\/span><\/p>\n – Travel within the country<\/span>\u00a0is limited<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n – The Bulgarian National Bank<\/span>\u00a0has adopted<\/span><\/a> a memorandum period for up to six months on loans taken from banks by individuals<\/span><\/p>\n – 1500 BGN or around 750 Euro per month of a zero-interest loan<\/span>\u00a0will be available<\/span><\/a> for up to three months for people whose employment has been affected by the crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n – Special restrictions for movement in and out of Roma neighbourhoods across the country <\/span>have been imposed<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n – Since the state of emergency was declared, 61 644 people<\/span> have applied<\/span><\/a> to the National Employment Agency as job-seekers and\/or to receive unemployment benefits <\/span>(as of April 9<\/span>th<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n – Half of all\u00a0 restaurants, bars, and cafes<\/span>\u00a0are expected<\/span><\/a> to go bankrupt. Nearly 500 000 people are employed in this sector.<\/span><\/p>\n
